As most of you know my Mother, Kathy Tavares, has been fighting a battle with cancer. For those of you who don't know here is her story:
In October, 2014 she was chosen to work at one of the cancer conferences that was being held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Since my father is from Brazil, they were very excited about the trip.
My mom said that every time someone would mention the trip to Brazil, she would hear a small voice telling her that they were not going.
Two days before their trip, she was admitted into the hospital and had emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction. The obstruction ended up being a carcinoid tumor that was malignant. She was told that this type of cancer is removable by surgery.
The tumor was removed along with 5" of her small bowel and lymph nodes in that area. Further test showed no signs of cancer.
We were all so THANKFUL they did not get on that flight.
On February 5, 2015, her oncologist told her she would need to be seen every 6 months for 2 years.
A week later she had her annual mammogram. The results came back abnormal, and the biopsy came back positive for breast cancer. This time the cancer was invasive, aggressive and deep in the tissue.
On March 30th a mastectomy of the left breast was done. The tumor and 8 lymph nodes were removed. The lymph nodes were all negative for further cancer and margins were cleared.
The final test, the oncotype, which is a score that determines the chances of cancer re-occuring, showed her at high risk of recurrence of cancer anywhere in her body. The highest score is a 40, her's was a 31.
Both my mother and father live daily by faith and complete trust in God and she believes that the still small voice was God preparing her for this.
My mother will need to continue with many treatments to help with reducing her risk of further cancer. She is considering many options.
In these few months she HAS incurred a significant amount of medical expenses because of her diagnosis.
Our family is asking for support at this time and hope that by doing this, Go Fund Me, will relieve the unneeded stress and worry and let her focus on her healing.
