Kathy Swope Kidney Transplant Fund

When I found out that my grandma was in need of a kidney, the first thing I wanted to do was to get tested in order to see if I was a match. Thus I did get tested and found out that I was a perfect match! I'm so excited to be able to give my grandma, who is also my best friend, a kidney. I got the call today that we have been given the green light to move forward with the operation despite a few bumps in the road. We are now just waiting on a date!

Her one and only kidney is currently functioning at 20%. This is very detrimental to her health considering the fact that many people, like myself, have two kidneys , both of which are working with 100% efficacy. The plan is to have the procedure finished before I go back to school on August 22nd!

I am setting up this account to try and help pay for her medical expenses that she will endure from this process. As giving her a kidney doesn't compare to helping her pay for it, I figured that the least I can do is try.

You are probably wondering why are we fundraising.  My grandma does have health insurance, but there are numerous expenses that her and I will endure before and after our surgeries; many of which her insurance will not cover.

Medical costs include:
-insurance deductibles
-insurance co-pays
-pre-transplant evaluation and surgery
-fees for the recovery of the organ from me
-follow-up care and testing
-additional hospital stays for complications
-fees for surgeons, physicians, radiologist, anesthesiologist and recurrent lab testing
-anti-rejection and other drugs, which can easily exceed $2,500 per month-rehabilitation
-loss of wages for myself and my grandmother

Transplantliving.org has estimated the total costs per person for a kidney transplant can add up to $262,900!

I have found that asking friends and family to donate to this cause is something that I struggle with. I struggle with being in this position because I prefer to be the person helping and giving to others. It is truly a humbling experience to be able to give my grandmother a kidney in order to help save her life!

Please help my grandma and I in our effort to receive the very best care possible. The transplant process is long, complicated, and costly with numerous physician visits and labs leading up to the transplant, as well as the overwhelming post-transplant care that is necessary. Your donation can help decrease the weight of the financial burden this will cause and help both my grandmother and I focus on a timely and efficient recovery as well as our lives in the future. Any donation, big or small, makes a big difference for us. Our family thanks you for your love and support.

PS. I love you, Tyler
