Kathy's Surgery and Hospital Fundraiser

Kathy Pearce (affectionately called Ma Pearce or Granny) had a fall Tuesday (12.10.2021) morning and hit her head. As of today (13.10.2021) her current condition is extremely life-threatening. After the first CT scan (taken when she arrived at the hospital late Tuesday morning) the prognosis was hopeful but when she failed to regain consciousness after midnight, the doctor became worried and ordered another scan. This one showed severe bleeding and swelling in the brain that indicated she had suffered a stroke. The doctor immediately ordered emergency surgery to relieve the pressure and clean up the blood in an attempt to save her life. She was in the OR for 8 hours— 5 of that was surgery.

 

We won't be able to tell how her body has responded to the surgery until they can perform another CT scan on Thursday 14 October. Her blood pressure is fluctuating dangerously and she is heavily sedated in an attempt to allow her brain to rest. There is a chance that her brain will start to bleed or swell again– in which case there is nothing further the doctors can do. Additionally, there is potential brain damage severe enough to prevent her from ever breathing on her own.

 

The family has already paid several thousand dollars to Doctor's Hospital to have her admitted. While Granny does have insurance, it remains to be seen what's actually going to be covered. But between the surgery, the ICU stay, and the bills from the individual specialists, we're estimating the out-of-pocket cost to be $60k-$75k.
