My name is Bobbie Jones. My sister-in -law, Kathy Jones is at M.D. Anderson hospital in Houston Texas. She is fighting stage 4 colon cancer. Kathy has been there since Sept 24th of this year. She is from Abilene Texas. Kathy and my brother Dempsey (Kathy's husband) went to the E.R. at M.D. Anderson because she was having pain from a bowel blockage related to her cancer. Kathy had just had 5 liters of fluid removed from her stomach in Abilene. I think this was the 2nd or 3rd time that she had to have fluid removed. I am writing this letter on a Friday night on October 17th. My brother Dempsey told me last night that Kathy was suffering. She had bleeding from her liver . (This was told to me from my daughter earlier in the day). He was crying on the phone while talking to me. It is hard for him to see her suffer and to feel helpless. I feel so thankful that my brother Dempsey is there to support his wife. I would like to help in some kind of way. I have bought a few small gifts and sent a scripture tonight via text from James in the Bible, Ch. 1, verses 1-8. It was about faith and endurance, which my brother read to Kathy, and thanked me for sending it. Kathy has a lot of faith in God.
My brother Dempsey and sister-in -law Kathy are good and humble people. They have always treated people well. I will tell you something about each one.
Kathy is a beautiful and kind person. She worked in the kitchen at a place for people with disabilities. Now she is working as a clerk in the office area, although she hasn't been able to work in months due to the cancer. Kathy loves her job and has planned on retiring from there. She has been there for over 10 years. Kathy is a happy person and always positive. She has one child in his early 30's. She also has a grandchild that just turned 7, that she adores. Kathy had one other child, that she lost at birth when they were stationed in Germany. This was a difficult time for her and my brother. Kathy has also helped cook large meals with my brother for the church on special occasions where my brother used to work. Kathy has always worked hard and never complained. Kathy and Dempsey are both members and attend the Holy Family Catholic church in Abilene. Kathy lost her father a few year ago. She also lost her mother-in-law (my mother) two years ago. Right after this, is when she found out that she had colon cancer. Kathy has always helped anyone in need, and has always been kind and thoughtful. I have been blessed to have her as a sister- law. Kathy is 56 years old and has been married to my brother since they were both 18. She has always just been a good and friendly person to all that she has come into contact with.
Kathy's faith is strong, and has remained strong throughout her battle with cancer. She has not complained, questioned, or doubted God, although it is only natural to have disappointments at one time or another. Kathy has been thankful for everyday that she is here. She wants to live, but know it's up to God (his will).
She has stated this. She still has not given up through all her trials that she has been through these past 2 years.
Now I will talk about my brother (Kathy's husband). My brother Dempsey loves Kathy as much as she loves him. He has been supportive and by her side through all of this, which Kathy is very thankful to have such a caring husband. Dempsey's love for Kathy is very strong and always has been. It has been difficult with Covid 19, as we all know. My brother Dempsey is remaining strong and trusting in God, but I know this has and is taking a toll on him . This is his loved one.
Dempsey was in the military (Army) for 20 years. He went to Germany, Saudi, and Iraq. In 1990 he was in Desert Storm and in 2003 he was in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received 19 medals including the Bronze Star. There was 147 in his unit in Iraq and only 5 received the Bronze Star. I'm not at all bragging, just showing the effort he put forward and how hard he worked. Also, to show Kathy is in good hands with a hard working husband. Dempsey has some disability related to the military. This is why he greets everyone with a friendly and loud voice (smile). When he got out of the military, he did maintenance at a hospital. He also worked a long time as a cook at a church/daycare. He is employed now as a cook at a retirement center. Dempsey raises animals (chickens, birds, etc.). I am not sure what else. He planted a garden this summer while Kathy sat outside. He has helped people as long as I can remember. He has always lent a helping hand to someone in need, like helping them move or whatever was needed. This is why a lot of people know him in Abilene, because of his kindness and generosity. He has always had a smile and a kind word for people. He is an all around good person and always happy to see someone. He recently had to take a leave of absence from work to help care for Kathy.
Although they are going through all of this, Kathy and Dempsey are staying positive and trusting God, not saying it is not hard. Dempsey has been walking everywhere in Houston, because he doesn't have his car, which he left in Dallas. He and Kathy drove from Abilene to Dallas, and my sister and her husband drove them the rest of the way to Houston to the hospital. They are going to try to come back to Abilene once the radiation is over. The radiation is to try to shrink the tumor, that is causing the blockage.
I would really like to help. Kathy is my lovely and good hearted sister-in law that I pray for everyday. I have a grandchild at home that really needs my help, and also recently have had some health problems. I would like to do something, so my brother and Kathy wouldn't have to worry so much about bills and other expenses. I hope someone will be able to help. I know people are going through a lot right now with this virus, and the economy the way it is. I know my brother and Kathy would appreciate any help right now. It doesn't matter at all what any of you might be able to give, anything would be a blessing and be greatly appreciated. My heart thanks you for your contribution or donation , or if you are unable, just please, please pray for Kathy. We love her so much. I know prayer has a lot of power and with you all praying, anything can turn around. I now God is listening. So please help.
God bless each and everyone of you. Also, any of you that's been affected by cancer, or any other illness, my heart and thoughts are with you as well. I pray and hope that you all stay safe during this and these trying times. Thanks for anything you may be able to give, and ALWAYS thanks for the prayers. To you all with love and your health. Signed, Bobbie.
