On Sunday, January 26th, the Fennimore community lost an amazing woman due to cancer. Mrs. Kathy (Katz) Nemec was a woman like no other and will be irreplaceable in our school, our community, and our hearts. Kathy offered the students and staff of Fennimore Middle/High School countless gestures of love, compassion, smiles, and laughter. Mrs. Nemec served our school for over twenty years (many on a volunteer basis) with early morning tutoring sessions, assistance throughout the school day, staying late at school (usually in the band room) to assist with school work, and opening her home at night to conduct her infamous study time before exams. It has often been said that Kathy assisted hundreds of students in passing their math classes. She had an incredible way of explaining things so all could understand. All of this was possible due to her beautiful heart, her passion for helping students succeed, and believing in them until they would believe in themselves.

Fennimore Community Schools would like to honor Kathy in a way that students from the past, present, and future will remember her. Mrs. Nemec had a passion for music, and our school was blessed to have her introduce the handbells to our students. The bell program grew into several different bell choirs, achieving notoriety throughout the state of Wisconsin. All the while, Mrs. Nemec stayed in the background and cheered them on.
Mrs. Nemec’s family shared that Kathy did not want any fanfare and preferred to be in the shadows of the shining students. She would not want anything extravagant or public to be done in her memory, but naturally, we want to do something. In honoring Kathy’s wishes, we have decided to put together a fundraising campaign to raise the money that is needed for the Fifth Octave Bell Set. If the amount of money needed to purchase the Fifth Octave Bells is achieved, any extra funds will be used to set up a scholarship fund for a music/bell student from Fennimore High School. We feel this gesture would represent who Kathy was and how many people she touched in her lifetime.
Hearing the chime of the bell choirs will forever remind us how passionate Kathy was for music and how much she loved our students. We think Kathy would be very happy and would approve of our efforts in enhancing the bell choir. Fennimore High School's bell choir will forever ring in memory of Kathy’s love and gracious heart.
Three opportunities have been set up to donate to this campaign, and all donations will be tax deductible.
