As most of you may know Kathleen "Kathy" Encinas-Feiman suffered a stroke late at night on May 18th in her home. Thankfully, her daughter Shannon and Son-in-law Matt were present and called 911, immediately.
Her stroke was caused by a hemorrhage in her brain, due to high blood pressure. They performed surgery and she seemed to be doing better for about a week. We are heart broken to know that she is not recovering as well as we had hoped.
She has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, which is being accelerated by her stroke. She has very limited mobility and speech at this time, although we are staying hopeful. She responds to and remembers some things, but not others.
She was preparing to start a new job this week and is expecting her first grandchild in September!
We want to bring Kathy home, as soon as possible. Unfortunately, as Shannon, her only child, sorts through the paperwork, she is seeing bills have been unpaid and piled up. She had no idea her mother was in a financial crisis. Doctors believe this may have been due to her declining cognitive state. Shannon concedes she seemed extra forgetful the last few months.
Shannon and Matt are realizing this is beyond their means, as they are soon to be first time parents.
If you know, Kathy, you know she is a light, a warm and welcoming woman. She has adopted plenty of us kids over the years. She would feed you, offer a safe space and give you every last penny she had if you really needed it. Many of us have lived in that house, still call it home and Kathy "Mom".
We're asking for the support of her community as we try to settle her feet back on the ground, help her through rehabilitation, pay some medical expenses and save her house. The emotional stress and financial obligations that have now been placed on Shannon are overwhelming.
Let's help Shannon bring her mom and her baby home in the coming months with love, grace and ease.
