Dear All My Love Ones, Relatives, Friends, and Even Strangers,
My mom, Katherine was abruptly diagnosed with colon cancer at the advance stage 4.
My name is Grace and I am 19 years old. I am writing this passage on behalf of my siblings and share the story of my mother, Katherine with you. Meet my mother, Katherine! She is an amazing and super mom! She is a single-mother of five beautiful children with the youngest being 15 years of age. We came from a background of poverty, struggle, domestic violence, and survival. Through our hardships, we have been amazingly being able to persevere and overcame these obstacles. We educated ourselves and gained our independence. We keep our faith and dreams alive and to continue to live our normal life everyday.

My mother, Kat has always taught my siblings and me how to be independent and self-reliant through life's unexpected winding road of challenges. Her repeatedly words: "to be bold, strong and possess an unshakable pride" still resonate deep inside me and now have a very different meaning. I must admit I have broken down a few times to my own desolation. What I face these days is an unfathomable cry that is soundless. In this void, I only hear my heart beating an echo I cannot comprehend: Perhaps is it Hope, hopelessness, grief, mourning, or despair?
I am no more bold, strong and full of pride. I am facing the simple truth that it takes a village for a woman to become a mother and a daughter like myself to become a woman.
The person responsible for allowing us to see and mark our very own dazzling future is my mother, Kat. She has dedicated most of her adult life to living holistically, fought and spoken for those who could not speak for themselves, advocated for people’s rights, social justice, human rights, and spoken vehemently against domestic violence. She is a community activist who poured her heart and soul into volunteering countless hours at our church and in the Hmong community. She has been an inspiration to her family and mentored many of her co-workers, neighbors, and people as far as California, Texas, Australia, and France – some of whom she had never meet. Above all, she takes care of us, especially with my younger brother who is autistic and needs special attention. She is always there for us whether through good times or bad times. We always tried to be a happy family.
Kat is now staying at home under my care for undergoing chemo treatments at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Despite of her conditions, I often still get confused on who is taking care and comforting whom. I have decided to put my educational goals on hold to be home and look after her. I enjoy every second of it and will never trade this moment for anything in the world. Every moment holds a gift and it is my sole honor to accept and embrace whole-heartedly this experience into my life. However, to see her go through fatigues, anxieties and physical pain yet still keeping her admirable smile only leave me arrows, which pierces through my heart every day and night. I drive her the distance of 160 miles round trip to Mayo Clinic once to twice a week. A few instances, we had needed to stay overnight. Until recently, I was full of hope with ample of dreams to try but life took me down this path. To come home and care after the most precious person in my life: mom. I don’t know the outcome of her treatment but I trust she will respond positively and win this battle.

Kat is a strong, passionate, inspiring, selfless woman and I have often seek her guidance and wisdom. She always puts others first. This is the epitome of my mom in this photo: strong, bold and full of pride. She is a fighter and we must fight with her.

Lastly, Kat was the sole breadwinner for our family. Until recently, she was energetic, hopeful and vibrant in every aspect of her life. With my mom not working and being unemployed over this past year, it has been financially difficult for our family.
I humbly ask for your love, prayers, and your generous donations to support our family in whatever way you can and in any amount even one dollar can still go a long way. Our goal is to raise about $40,000. Your generous contributions will be use towards the cost of transportation to and from the Mayo Clinic, lodging, meals, outstanding household bills, and seeking complementary and alternative medicines that are not covered by insurance, co-pays, and other medical costs.
My family and I will be appreciative of any contribution and will forever be in debt and pay it forward. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your generosity and support for my mom, my family and I.
With gratitude and love,
Grace Kue
