Kate's Dream Accordion Fund
Backstory:
I've had a lovely 15 adventurous years with my sweet pearly white Crucianelli accordion, but it's been through a lot and taken a few rough hits while on the road (carried around Canada, US & Mexico by either bicycle, car, van, train, trolly...) or in the company of kids (both human and goat variety). The poor thing has had kimchi juice spilled on it; fallen out of the back of a rideshare van, tumbled off of a broken bike trailer, and yanked at and chewed on by various species. The thing is a tank, but the wear is showing now, physically and audibly.
It's time for a new accordion!
On a recent trip to Seattle I visited the amazing Petosa Accordion shop and happened upon my dream instrument (Pictured). It was an incredible experience to be able to try out their custom made accordions as well as other beautiful squeezeboxes they had in stock. The wonderful staff there treated my partner and me so well, offering refreshments, suggesting accordions to try, giving bits of history and other details, and a tour of the shop where they build the instruments. So, I tried out several accordions, and when I started playing their Compatto Pro model I fell in love. Everything came so easily, and sounded so full and resonant, with so many options for changing the tone for different moods or moments. I felt a surge of inspiration and new potential. It's lightweight and has a gorgeous wooden (burled mahogany) finish. What more could I want?!
The catch is, as an extremely high-quality instrument, it is pricey. Looking at at least $8000. But I know it will be a worthwhile investment for the future of my practice and performances.
I got a job-job in a kitchen a couple weeks ago partially to fund this new future-accordion. It'll take at least a year or two for me to save up enough dough to start playing it.
While I'm slowly saving my own funds to eventually play this beautiful instrument, I know there might be some folks out there who would be willing to help expedite the process. It also happens to be my 29th birthday on Monday (March 4th) and some folks may feel inclined to give good wishes or gifts. If you'd like, you can donate a few bucks to my Dream Accordion Fund, and support my musical future. Either way, I'm super grateful that you came here to read this. THANK YOU!!! <3
I'll still use the Crucianelli for higher-risk gigs and to provide for students, but now that I'm more settled and trying to progress in my art forms, it will be a huge benefit to have a good quality working instrument that will encourage me to grow musically.
So, if you'd like to help the process along and hear me play better music sooner, consider throwing a handful of bucks into the pot. :)
Thank you so much, I can't wait to play this beautiful instrument for you all!
Love and gratitude,
Kate
Note to those who knew Vic Horvath:
Last year after our little BC tour together, Vic Horvath sent me a link to this campaign they created in order to raise funds to get me a new accordion. I was in tears then, and am now, about how incredibly caring and sweet a gesture this was. Such a classic Vic move. I was too sheepish to accept the help then, but I always felt a lingering sadness that I didn't let Vic carry it out, 'cause they really wanted to help (it did, to know I had such amazing supportive friends). Well, here I am now, asking for help, thanks to the encouragement from Vic.
<3 Rest well, friend, and thanks for all the fun musical and silly times. <3
