KATE'S STORY
If you are fortunate, you know someone who instinctively looks at the bright side of life. For them, no matter the situation, solutions are a brainstorm or prayer away. The glass is always half full.

For those who know Kate Jurgens, the perks of knowing her are evident from the moment you meet -- a bright smile and warm hug, a sincere ask about you and your family, and inevitable laser focus on how she can help…either you or someone else in need.

That’s what Kate does: Helps people. As a nurse case manager at the OB/GYN Residency at Columbia Saint Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, she works with women struggling with high-risk pregnancies. As a wife and mother of four, she’s very active on the home front. When not with her family or at work, you will likely find Kate volunteering at Saint Robert Parish or Dominican High School. Then there’s the pro-level photography. As Kate recently said of her decade as Dominican’s unofficial school photographer: “I pray for each student with every click of my shutter.”

All those glasses, all half full.

In a blink, everything changed on her 53rd birthday. Kate was diagnosed with Stage 2 Grade 3 HER2 Neu + Breast Cancer.

The Bad News: It’s a very aggressive form of breast cancer.
The Good News 1: It was discovered at an early stage and has a high cure rate.
The Good News 2: Kate is tough as nails and will beat this.

Kate’s road to recovery demands an intense and costly yearlong treatment protocol (chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and more chemotherapy). Kate’s oldest daughter Mo followed in her mother’s footsteps and is a nurse at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Mo knows the hospital well as she has been treated medically and surgically throughout her life for Loeys Dietz syndrome (a rare connective tissue disorder that impacts her orthopedic, neurologic and cardiovascular structure), and is preparing for her 28th surgery. These medical needs will result in significant costs to the Jurgens family, even after insurance kicks in.

The Good News 3: Kate has us!

It is time for us to fill Kate’s glass.
