Katelyn Can! Join us in her fight!

When I first started thinking about doing this Go Fund Me for Katelyn I Googled the phrase, “how do you describe the most amazing person you know”. The results came back and I looked through the them and was blown away that everything I was reading was describing Katelyn to a T.

Katelyn is a cheerful, kind, compassionate person who genuinely cares about everyone she meets and knows.  She has had a lot of bumps in the road during her life but with every bump she sees it as an opportunity to do something for others and never complains about the difficulties. She is truly a caring person and wants to do anything she can for others.

I had the privilege of meeting Katelyn when I took a new job in McPherson Ks. From the moment I met her I could tell that she had a heart of gold and was truly caring. In the year and a half that I have known Katelyn I have seen first hand all the good she has done for others. From bake sales, coin drives, and walkathons all the way to raising money to ensure that sick kids got a good Christmas. She has raise thousands of dollars and put in hundreds to thousands of hours to do good for other people.

In the year and a half that I have known Katelyn she has also been going through a lot of medical issues. It amazes me that with everything going on in her life and with her medical issues, that the only thing she ever wants to do is help others. If that doesn’t describe selflessness and giving than I don’t know what does.

Katelyn was most recently diagnosed with Hypereosinophilic Syndrome and will have to travel to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to undergo multiple tests and appointments to try and get to the root cause of the illness and a plan to fight it. She has spent months going to different doctors in this area and have blood draw after blood draw to only learn that the treatments aren’t working and that they really aren’t sure what is going on, but that its not good and needs to be address. Katelyn is unfortunately not new to medical issues.  She has been battling different illnesses and sicknesses almost her entire life.

Katelyn’s medical issues started when she was 8 years old. She has been in and out of doctors and hospitals since then battling several different illnesses, each one taking a toll on her body and mind. She had a large ovarian teratoma removed at 8, was diagnosed with severe poly-articular junior rheumatoid arthritis at 12 which is something she has to deal with daily and has had many other issues which have required many doctor visits and surgery since. Through it all she has remained positive and uses her fight to power her to help others. She has had 17 surgeries, 5 of which have been in the last 14 months.

Katelyn will be traveling to the Mayo clinic with her parents for 1 to 3 weeks for the initial appointments. This is putting a huge financial burden on her and her parents, with vacation time quickly running out with all of the appointments she has had thus far. After the initial trip, the hope is to get to the route cause of the disease and a treatment plan which could result in months of medical treatments for Katelyn and missed time from work.

Katelyn and her family are very proud people and never asks for help. She would rather give everything she has and herself to helping others. Anything that we raise for Katelyn and her family on this Go Fund Me will be used for medical expenses or expenses incurred as a result of traveling for appointments and treatments.  Knowing Katelyn, she will also use anything extra to make sure that others are getting things that the need as well.

If you have been looking for a reason to give to someone there is not a more perfect person. Katelyn is by far the best person I have ever met and I look forward to seeing her beat this disease and keep helping people the way she always has. No gift is to small and everything helps.

Katelyn learned the true gift of life a long time ago in giving to others. As Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
