Kate & Sonja

A lot of you already know Kate Firmani.  A lot of you knew Sonja, her horse.

Many of you have already heard about the tragedy.

Sonja, Kate's Fjord mare, died in April, along with 7 other horses, on her family's farm during one horrific week.  The testing has finally been completed  and, it has been concluded that all 8 horses died of Botulism Type B poisoning from one bale of alfalfa hay.  Kate was with Sonja when she died and Kate has been devastated since that time.

Why was Sonja so special?  Because she made Kate whole.   You see,  Kate is a special needs individual who is also legally blind.  She has a white cane but hates using it.  She is intellectually disabled with substantial learning and language disabilities.  She will never be able to live independently due to her limitations . . .

But with horseback riding, Kate found freedom.

With Sonja, Kate wasn't judged.  Together they were both allowed to be the best they could both be.  They weren't categorized as special.

Sonja was Kate’s best friend, confidante, companion & care-taker.

Kate's mare, Sonja was both maternal and watchful for Kate.

Sonja was more than Kate’s Norwegian Fjord Horse.  Sonja was Kate’s therapy horse and confidence-booster and doorway to independence.

Kate could drive Sonja in their sulky, as Sonja was an accomplished wheel-horse in a four-up team.  Kate could ride Sonja……..at 14.2 hands, Sonja was close to the ground, but sturdy enough to carry Kate safely and deftly.

There will never be another Sonja, but there NEEDS to be another horse.  Riding and Southcreek Foxhounds Hunt Club meant everything to her.  Since witnessing the death of her horse, Kate's emotional stability has been greatly effected.   Kate has moods swings, outbursts  and nightmares regularly.   As she is a special needs adult it is imperative that Kate have a sense of normalcy to function within her home.   It is important to get her back to where she was before Sonja's death.   I hope that everyone who knows her, or knows of her, can reach into their pockets and help.

As you can imagine, losing 8 horses, vet bills, burials, etc. has been quite financially taxing on Kate's family.  Since Kate has no ability to earn money due her her disability,  my goal is for everyone to pitch in to buy Kate a gentle, safe, experienced Fjord Mare.   A mare that can drive and be ridden.   The amount I am trying to raise should cover the cost of the horse, vet check, and shipping.   The horse will be immunized for botulism.

Thank you for your assistance in helping this precious young lady.     Your contribution will make a substantial difference in her life.
