My name is Jessica and I am the mother of 3 beautiful kids. Times are hard on everyone and I am not one who likes asking for help, but early this year my middle child, Kassidy, age 3, was diagnosed with a progressive genetic disorder called NF1. This disorder is known to cause a wide array of symptoms, that vary patient to patient, with the most common being tumors that appear on the skin or inside the body. (Anywhere there are nerves is susceptible) Since being diagnosed, Kassidy is having a team of doctors in Chapel Hill monitor her wellbeing. She suffers with headaches, tummy problems, random pain throughout her legs and feet, itchy skin, a dairy allergy, and lots of other issues that have affected her daily life and ability to attend school. Last week Kassidy had her first MRI and we were devastated with the results. She has what is called an optic pathway glioma, or brain tumor. Kassidy could possibly require chemotherapy, radiation treatments, or both, and still has several more appointments coming up to check other parts of her body. Despite all of this, she still tries to be a typical silly and smiling kid every chance she gets. She is so sweet and I wish I could take away every ounce of pain she is experiencing, but for now all I can do is pray that God give us strength and means to make it through this stronger than ever. Unfortunately, with the disorder not have a cure and being progressive, we have no way of knowing what the future holds.
