Hey, my name is Kassia!
I’m a Marine Biology & Oceanography (MBO) student at the University of Plymouth. This year I’m stepping into a massive part of my degree — a placement year focused on gaining experience in the field!
Come November, I'll be working on a project with the University of Plymouth research team in the Turks and Caicos Islands, contributing to important work that tackles the issue of “parachute science.” This project combines accurate, in-depth scientific research with community outreach and engagement, ensuring data collected is meaningful both for advancing scientific understanding and for supporting the people and ecosystems it directly affects. It’s a huge opportunity for me to develop my skills while being part of research that really matters.
In January I will be joining Global Reef Koh Tao in Thailand, an organisation at the forefront of reef restoration and marine conservation.Their projects range from coral propagation and transplantation to large-scale reef rebuilding in collaboration with the Thai government. They are pioneering AI-powered reef monitoring and 3D digital modelling, making it possible to efficiently analyse and track reef health and much more...
This placement will allow me to gain practical experience in coral restoration, contribute directly to conservation efforts, and observe how science and community engagement come together to protect reef ecosystems.
I’m especially passionate about making the marine world feel more accessible — not just through science, but through stories, imagery, and real-life examples. Whether I’m taking underwater photos at local beaches in Plymouth, sharing what boat and lab work looks like, or documenting community-led projects in places like the Turks and Caicos Islands, my goal is to show people what a life centred around ocean health really looks like. It’s not only about research — it’s about helping people understand the ocean’s importance, feel connected to it, and see how they can play their part. Because how can we expect people to care if they’ve never seen its beauty, never felt its power, or never been shown why it matters?
This year is a stepping stone into the world I want to be part of — a world where science, community, and creativity come together to protect what we love.
The cost of this year is likely to exceed £5,000, covering travel, accommodation, training, equipment, and living costs. That’s where this fundraiser comes in. Every contribution, big or small, goes toward a year dedicated to learning, growing, and building a foundation for long-term impact — and to my journey as a scientist and ocean conservationist.
Thank you so much for being here and supporting this journey!
With love and appreciation,
Kass x
