Karyn Rhoades is a wife and mother of two sons, one in college and one just recently married. She is a soon-to-be grandmother with her oldest son eagerly awaiting a baby girl. Karyn’s favorite holiday is Christmas, and she had the most extravagant day prepared for her family, one filled with presents, traditions, and love. Unfortunately on Christmas Eve, Karyn was horseback riding with her friends when she fell off of her horse. She landed face first onto the concrete and sustained multiple fractures to her face, several fractured ribs, and substantial brain trauma with a brain bleed and blood clot. She was rushed to Morris Hospital where she remained unconscious, but had stable vitals. Thankfully, she was able to be rushed to Loyola University Hospital's Level 1 Trauma Center in Maywood where she was placed in ICU and received further testing and diagnostics including a CT scan. She spent the next three days mostly unconscious, very confused, and in a tremendous amount of pain. As the days went on, she made significant physical progress, but she remained both very confused and has had major gaps in memory. After fourteen days in the ICU, she was finally moved down to the general medical hospital floor. We both pray and believe she will make a full physical recovery, but we still do not have much information on the short- or long-term aspects of her mental recovery. Karyn was moved to Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center. At this facility, she began working on recovering her short-term memory recall and processes and has made a lot of progress. Karyn is now back at home, but the journey is far from over.
Although the Rhoades family has medical insurance, they are losing about two thirds of their household income with Karyn out of work for the foreseeable future. By donating, this money will help keep the Rhoades family afloat with a granddaughter on the way, her youngest son in college, and cover the additional medical bills they will be having to take on. Thank you so much for your time and consideration in helping Karyn through this traumatic time.
