Karuna's Road to Recovery

Karuna was admitted to the ER on Tuesday to undergo emergency spine surgery.

It all started with his ongoing pain and numbness in his left arm. He could not grip anything; he would drop his phone, water bottle, etc.

Concerned, he went to see the doctors on Monday, where he underwent an MRI scan.

After the doctors reviewed his MRI, they called him with the diagnosis of Ossification of Posterior Longitudinal Ligament (OpLL). As a result, he needed to be admitted to the ER immediately.

His MRI scan revealed his upper spine was compressed, and he needed emergency surgery immediately to decompress his spine.

Without this surgery, he would be permanently paralyzed if he slipped on ice, fell down the stairs, or had any injury that would impact his spine.

His surgery went well; however, he is fragile and in extreme pain.

The procedure affected his nerves, so he is completely motionless. He is unable to move his neck, arms and legs.

He will be hospitalized and then transferred to rehab for the next 7-8 months. Or at least until he starts walking again.

Today, October 7, 2022, is day 2 after surgery. He can talk more. However, he is still very motionless as he cannot wiggle his toes and fingers, lift his arms and legs or move his neck.

Although he is in a lot of pain, he still manages to keep a smile on his face
