In memory of Rosabelle Ranji Jeevaratnam (1933-2023) and in keeping with her wishes and her legacy as an educator for all of her working career, the GoFundMe fundraiser was made to support Karuna Nilayam (House of Mercy), in lieu of flowers.
Karuna Niliyam is a Centre for physically and psychologically challenged women and girls, providing education and life skills for self-sufficiency.
A brief history of Karuna Nilayam, Kilinochchi, Sri Lanka.
Miss. Muriel Hutchins was posted at Karuna Nilayam by The Ven. John A. R. Navaratnam, and Rev. R. C. Luckraft on 29 Oct 1955. She was supported very strongly by The Lord Bishop of Colombo, Ven. Archibald Graham Campbell. A teacher by profession, at the age of 55, she started this community to upgrade the lives of disadvantaged women and children.
Now, after years of civil war and neglect the community is still in the process of healing and rehabilitation.
