My name is Christopher Cross. I am the Deputy Fire Chief for the Marshalltown Fire Department in Marshalltown, Iowa. One of my firefighters has a young son who is going through some difficult medical problems currently. I am initiating this campaign to help the family with expenses related to this situation.
Karsen Raue is an elementary school aged little boy who began suffering stroke like symptoms on October 20, 2019. His father, Curt, is a career firefighter and this mother, Ashley is a teacher. Here is a Facebook post from Curt on the day Karsen started getting sick:
“Yesterday morning Karsen started feeling dizzy and began vomiting. After resting all day he did not feel any better and even started to show some signs that were pretty concerning. In the afternoon we decided to take him to urgent care which instead turned into an ambulance ride to the er. After running some tests that produced some unsettling results but no real answers, they transferred Karsen to Iowa City so he can have the best people and resources assigned to his case. Now, a little more than a month after he was so excited to get to wave to the kids at the children’s hospital, Karsen is now a patient here. Everyone is being really great and they are working hard to figure out what’s going on. Unfortunately, as of right now we still don’t know what the problem is. Thanks everyone who has stepped in to help at home and thanks everyone who came along to support us and K. We’ll try to keep everyone updated as we learn more. For now, please send some extra prayers Karsen’s way.”
Doctors determined that Karsen had a stroke and was treated and discharged from the University of Iowa Hospitals after a lengthy stay. Recently, Karsen had another stroke and is back at the University. This time, the most recent stroke has effected right side of his body and speech.
Transporting Karsen to the U of I by ambulance and lengthy stays are expensive. While insurance is covering the majority of the medical expenses, both Curt and Ashley are running out of vacation and sick time. We need your donations to help the Raue family be with their son while he is in the hospital, and still be able to cover their expenses.
