Karri’s journey to good health for her mind, body and spirit in healing and well-being is what she prays for each day. Since being diagnosed with liver failure earlier this year, it has impacted her life tremendous. Karri is a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister and our friend. Karri would like to share her story in hopes for your love, compassion and prayers that will get her and her family through of what is becoming some of the hardest times of her life. Here is her story.
“For some of you out there, I have a story I would like to share that has impacted my life immensely. About a year ago I wasn’t feeling well. Throughout the months, I continued to feel worse. Little by little my body started to deteriorate. By May of this year my eyed started to turn yellow, I slept all the time and my appetite was little to none. My abdomen started swelling like a balloon. Finally, I listened to my daughter’s plea and that I needed to go to the hospital. I went to the ER and after blood work, I was diagnosed with kidney failure and liver failure. I was told at that time if I hadn’t come to the hospital I would have lived for about another 72 hours. I spent most of June in the hospital and in ICU. I had 8 blood transfusions, plus a huge list of other needed medications to keep me alive. My kidneys slowly started improving and now are almost in the normal range. However, my liver is not. I have had to travel Spokane for countless medical appointments, specialist visits, seemingly countless tests to closely monitor the severity of the illness and its progression and abdomen drains, ranging from 5.4 liters to 7.1 at my highest. (A liter weighs 2.2 pounds) Between Rob, my mom, family and friends, I’ve been able to receive these necessary appointment and drains since I cannot drive.
Since writing this and posting on Facebook back in October, I did travel to The Swedish Liver Transplant Clinic in Seattle. I was informed that my failing condition placed me on the list to receive the greatest gift of all, a new liver. But, with so many in need, being on the list doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen soon. Unfortunately, life and my failing condition doesn’t wait and each day is a struggle. Some days better than others. I have had some complications with the levels of my potassium and magnesium, memory lost and speech slurring and some other issues that has had me in the ER more regular than I’ve wanted. I do try to keep positive, and am so thankful for each moment and hope with all my heart and soul that I survive to see many more! I wake up each morning, praying today will be the day! I know it’s all in God’s timing. “
These last 7 months have been the hardest struggle on all levels that Karri has endured. The ongoing devastating threat to her body, the overwhelming emotional agony and insurmountable financial burden due to lost wages, medical expenses (those that are not covered by insurance) make it a struggle to get ahead. The impact of her condition has brought Karri and Rob to worry about their financial level and has completely drained their savings account. Due to her current condition, Karri hasn’t have been able to be by herself and has needed care. Her mom has since moved into the home to care for her while Rob is at work. They both know that this journey and the outcome will be worth every ounce of effort, but will also be financially draining, even for their most basic necessities needed: utilities, food, medications, co-pays, healthcare provider’s bills (even with insurance), transportation and the bills keep coming. When Karri is selected to go to Seattle for her transplant, she and Rob will be required to live close to the hospital for 2 months for follow-up appointments and close monitoring. This too, will require funds for housing, food and basic living expenses.
We are calling upon you dearest friends, family, loved ones near and far. At this time, we ask for your support. Your generous donations, prayers and positive thoughts will help make this possible, as Karri fights the good fight. If you are able and can lessen their burden financially, so Karri and her family can focus on the future and get to the transplant that is so greatly needed. They would be forever thankful.
With immense love,
Karri, Family and her Team
