My name is Karmil Suliman. I was born a stateless refugee in Syria where I began
my ballet studies at the age of 9 at Enana Dance Theater in Damascus. In 2021 I
was awarded a scholarship to study at the National Academy of Dance in Rome,
Italy, after winning the gold medal in the Ballet Beyond Borders International Ballet
In 2022, I was given a scholarship to study at Dance Area Geneva, and to be a part
of the Area Jeune Ballet, the school’s junior company.
Since I was little, dancing has been my dream. It has carried me through the dark
times of war and the loss of many loved ones.
In January 2023, I competed again in Ballet Beyond Borders’ competition in
Montana, where I was awarded two silver medals and one gold medal. I also
received many opportunities, scholarships to study at three different prestigious
ballet academies, such as the Washington Ballet, Joffrey Ballet Chicago, and Goh
Ballet in Canada, as well as a company contract in Denver, Colorado.
Due to my current financial situation, I cannot accept any of these offers, and I
already had to decline my acceptance to Washington Ballet and to Goh Ballet.
I am looking to raise enough money to pay for a US visa, flight tickets, and living
costs, so that I may travel to the United States to pursue my offer from Joffrey Ballet,
which includes a summer intensive that starts in July 2023. This makes my goal
come out to 5000$.
I am asking for your help to become fully prepared for a first company contract. This
would mean realising my life long goal of supporting myself through dance, and not
letting this first career-launching opportunity go to waste. I am determined to take full
advantage of it, to grow and learn in the hopes of helping my family and one day
showing the world a different side of Syria. I hope to use my experience to help
rebuild my country and help other Syrian artists achieve their dreams.
With Your Help I Can Truly Do It! Thank you!
