Karlie Saelens, a sophomore at Clarksville High School in Tennessee, recently graduated as an alumni of the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. This program recognizes the nation’s most promising high school scholars who aspire to have careers in medicine and science.
As part of this honor, Karlie took her first oath, the Declaration of Geneva, a modern successor to the Hippocratic Oath adopted by the World Medical Association, affirming her commitment to the ethical practice of medicine.
She was also inducted into the Torch and Laurel Honor Society, developed by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), which recognizes exceptional academic achievement and leadership among high school students preparing for collegiate success.
Building on these accomplishments, Karlie has been selected to join FutureDocs Abroad in July 2026, traveling to Hue, Vietnam, for an intensive, hands-on medical immersion program designed to prepare her to serve as a compassionate and skilled physician. In this program, she will gain direct clinical exposure in an international medical environment, participating in the same advanced activities as third- and fourth-year medical students. Karlie will observe and assist physicians in gross anatomy labs, operating rooms, and medical treatment facilities, spending countless hours in hospitals and clinics overseas.
“From a young age, I have felt a deep calling to serve others through medicine. I have dedicated countless hours to studying, volunteering, and preparing to achieve my medical goals and to eventually give back as a future pediatric surgical oncologist." - Karlie
