Karla's life-saving kidney transplant

My aunt Karla lives in Guanajuato, Mexico, with her two sons, Patricio and Santiago. She has been living with diabetes for a long time. However, due to limited access to medical treatments and expensive monitoring tools, her situation has taken a turn recently. 

Around the 1st of December 2023, she started feeling extremely bloated, to the point where she could not walk, had a terrible cough, and had a hard time going up the stairs without gasping for air. After running some studies and scans, we discovered that both of her kidneys are at 15% capacity and that one of her lungs has collapsed. The doctor said that there is no chance of saving either of her kidneys and that she needs hemodialysis twice a week until she can get a kidney transplant.

My aunt has been trying to get treated through public healthcare, but the options they provide are limited and may take longer than she has, so we have had to turn to private doctors for now. My cousin, Patricio (Karla’s son) wants to donate one of his kidneys to save his mom's life. However, this surgery (without insurance) costs about $55,000 to perform, and before that happens, we would need to run some tests to ensure that his kidney would be compatible with my aunt's. For the hemodialysis treatment to begin, she needs a special catheter that costs around $2,800. Each hemodialysis costs around $270, which would have to be twice a week for about six months (which is how long it might take us to raise the money for the transplant), resulting in a cost of about $14,000. Beyond this, there are many other costs to cover, such as medicines, scans, and recovery treatments.

My cousins Pato and Santi lost their dad about 10 years ago and are still dependents of my aunt. Karla has struggled financially her whole life, and it would be impossible for her to cover these life-saving treatments by herself. Please help us get her the help she needs to live a long happy life with her family.

Transplante de riñón para Karla

Mi tía Karla vive en Guanajuato, México, con sus dos hijos, Patricio y Santiago. Karla ha estado viviendo con diabetes desde hace mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, debido al acceso limitado a tratamientos médicos y herramientas de monitoreo costosas, su situación ha empeorado recientemente.

Sin embargo, esta cirugía cuesta alrededor de $55,000 dólares, y antes de que eso suceda, necesitaríamos realizar algunas pruebas para asegurarnos que su riñón es compatible.
