Hello my name is Mariel (A.K.A. Ruby) and I am fundraising for my sister, Karla Sosa.

If you know Karla, you know that she rarely asks for help. I’d say she’s the true definition of a DIYer. Whether it’s painting the house or creating an elaborate bulletin board for her classroom, Karla is always ready to take on a challenge, giving her all and asking little of others. Yet… though I know she’d hate to admit it, this is a trial that she needs help with.

This summer on our trip to visit family in Arizona, Karla decided to take advantage of our proximity to Mexico (and the low cost medical care she could receive there) to see a physician and address some discomfort she had been having. There the doctor notified her that there was a polyp in her colon that required immediate attention. She had surgery the next day. Despite our prayers, after having it analyzed, we found out that the tumor they removed was cancerous.

Upon returning to Dallas, Karla sought care and found an oncologist who has been overseeing her treatment. After a few tests we found out that Karla has malignant mucosal melanoma, a rare form of skin cancer found in mucosal areas of the body, often rare to diagnose.

Karla started her immunotherapy treatments a few months ago and despite some side effects, we were pleased to hear that she has been responding well to this treatment.

Karla has been very quiet about her illness. Pushing through silently, meeting the demands of keeping a home are raring two middle school aged children. Karla is a Pre-K teacher and takes on every challenge full-heartedly.

Though I know Karla would find a way to get through this herself… I am asking for help on her behalf.This new obstacle is one she was not expecting. It is a trial that is challenging her and her loved ones physically, mentally, emotionally and financially.

Though Karla has been fortunate enough to have been accepted to a program that will assist with some medical expenses, this program does not cover everything. As of now each infusion is costing nearly $3,000 out of pocket, not including consultations, or other medication that she may need. Needless to say, the medical bills have been piling up.

One of the things she has told me through this journey is how amazed she is from the outpouring of love and kindness that she receives daily. Whether it is donating here, sharing this post, sending a thoughtful message or having her in your prayers, we truly appreciate your help. I know that with a village behind her she will overcome this triumphantly. Thank you all so much.
