Karing-4-Katie is a fundraiser for Katie Lopez and her family. I had the opportunity to spend some time with her and hear just a small piece of her story.

October 2020 was a life-changing time for Katie. After being rushed to the emergency room and having several tests done, she heard the three words that no one wants to hear…you have cancer. Katie battled with the thoughts of “why me?” She shared how over time, she eventually changed her way of thinking and started asking...” why not me?” She thought about how she could use this to affect others in a positive way. She spent six months fighting this horrible disease, and then in April 2021 she rang that bell and was in remission!!!

In August 2022, she received some devesting news. After being in remission for over a year, the cancer returned. As you can imagine this news was beyond devesting for her and her family.

Katie shared how much her husband and three young children, ages 9, 13, and 15, have been amazing throughout this process. Not only did it change her life but it rocked their worlds too.

She said that this journey has taught her to be vulnerable and her child to be resilient and strong. She talked about how much they amaze her with their strength every day. Her face and eyes lit up as she talked about her children.

Katie’s son Ethan (15), who attends Willis High School, has not only emotionally helped Katie but insisted to learn how to help with her Picc Line. He recently told Katie he wants to work in the medical field and help others. He isn’t sure exactly what pathway in medicine he wants to take yet but medicine is definitely it.

What she said next amazed me…once again she found a positive in this heartache…she told me that because of this, one of her kids may have found the passion that will shape their future.

Katie ended our conversation with a smile and said “I strive every day to see my kids’ milestones.”

Over the last few months, Katie has gone through some hard treatment cycles which have caused her to become sick and weakened her immune system, however when you see her, you would never know the battle she was fighting, why, because she refuses to let it steal her joy!

To know Katie is to know God’s love. Her faith and strength are an encouragement to those who are in her presence.
