As many of you know, I've had the opportunity to work for Hope Corps for over a year now. We are a community development organization that has built critical infrastructure in impoverised communities.
From an AIDS orphanage in Cambodia to a typhoon shelter in the Philippines, Hope Corps has provided clean water, schools, medical care, and more to communities all around the world.
With my continued work for Hope Corps, I now have the opportunity to travel as a Hope corps ambassador, with my 18 month old daughter Lily, to the country of Nepal in 2018. I would be working on an education based project in the mountain community of Tolka, to help improve the quality of education and infrastructure at Shree Himalaya Secondary School.
Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries despite it's natural beauty and vibrant culture. After the 7.9 magnitude earthquake in 2015, one million people fell below the poverty line, and the aftermath continues to affect the country. Roughly 50% of Nepalis live in poverty, many on less than $2 a day. Women and children living in rural communities remain the most at risk populations to fall into poverty and drop out of school.
To have the opportunity to support education for children who have very little, but choose to smile regardless of their plight, would be one of the greatest gifts. Traveling with my daughter to experience a new country and to teach her the importance of intercultural understanding and empathy while making a difference for many children and families would be a life-changing adventure for the both of us. And you can help make that possible!
