Karen's Needs A Wheelchair Van
Donation protected
My name is Karen Van Benschoten. I am a Navy veteran, disabled due to MS. Most of the year I spend just sitting in my recliner, getting no exercise at all. I was diagnosed with MS in 2007, and now use a wheelchair exclusively. Due to a veteran's program, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, I was introduced to wheelchair sports.
This summer, I made the decision to push myself a little, become more active, and to take part in veteran's wheelchair sporting events around the country, the next of which is the Valor Games Midwest, in Chicago, Aug 18-20.
One of the sports I've come to love is handcycling, which is very difficult to train for as I do not have one of my own..
What I am trying to do is raise the money for a basic handcycle of my own.
Without these types of events, I would be unable to participate in wheelchair sports, which is one of the few ways I have to help maintain good health, through exercise, competition, and the pure enjoyment of being active.
In order to become more mobile, I am in need of a wheelchair van as well to promote my independence.
