Our sister, Karen, has Stage 4 breast cancer. She has been fighting this cancer since she was 38 years old. It metastasized to her bones 4 years ago. She has been through rounds and rounds of surgeries, treatments, clinical trials and radiation over the past decade.
All who know Karen know that she is filled with grace and unbelievable optimism. She inspires everyone and spreads sunshine to everyone she meets.
Karen has been a single mother through all of this. She has continued to teach kindergarten whether feeling nauseous, exhausted, or with swollen, achy feet from the neuropathy that resulted from the chemo treatments. She continues to share her love and light for many kindergarteners year after year and simply refuses to miss a day because she says it’s just too hard on her “precious children."
But now, Karen's doctor is recommending a new and more aggressive treatment. Karen is afraid the new treatment will be too difficult to go through while teaching and is considering delaying it until her kindergarteners feel comfortable in their new environment. She, once again, is thinking of her students before herself.
We, and her family and friends, feel it is time for Karen to devote her energy to her treatment. We hope to provide her with the option to take some time from work, fight this cancer, and to live her best life.
Let’s all pitch in and make this an option for her! Lets allow her to continue spreading her sunshine but as a volunteer or as a substitute teacher. We all know this is her passion, but we want to enable her the time to fight this cancer. We want her to be home and for her to take care of herself now. We want to raise money to help make this happen.
We have watched our sweet sister give and give to people her whole life. She has been blessed with so many people who love and care about her. We are reaching out for more positive thoughts, prayers and help. Thank you for reading this and thank you for your prayers and your giving. Lots of a little can add up to a lot. It takes a village!
