Karens Miracle Glasses

As many of you know my mother Karen Jones Woods has a very rare eye disease called Angioid streaks caused by a rare connective tissue disease called Pseudoxanthomaelasticum or PXE. This disease is incurable. For the past 19yrs she has been legally blind, unable to work, read, or drive. She has adjusted to life without vision so gracefully and has always just made the best of it. Although it was difficult,frustrating, and often time hopeless she kept going. We have been through countless doctors and have been let down time and time again. She has prayed daily for years and has come to terms that her vision will not be restored in this life. BUT GOD HAS OTHER PLANS!!!!!! Through one of his angels He sent a miracle. My mother’s long time friend Hazel Faw came across an article in a magazine about Dr. Paul’s Vision Institue in Charlotte NC. Without getting her hopes up mom agreed to give it one more try. On Tuesday,  January 7,2020, Hazel and her husband Dink picked her up and drove her to the appointment. This time the appointment was different. Not only did Dr. Paul know her disease, but has treated other PXE patients before. My mother cried as the the doctor uttered the words she has waited 19 yrs to hear.... “I can help you”. After several test he began to fit and customize a specialized type of glasses for her. For the first time in 19 years my mother vision went from blind to 20/40 vision. Not only could she see clearly but with great detail! A miracle sent straight from heaven! He gave her several more reading test and her excitement grew with each passed test! After one more test he said “ congratulations you just passed your drivers test”. That’s right my mom could see well enough to pass the written exam for her driver’s license! He begin to explain that although it is not a cure....these glasses will give her her independence and her life back! My mom wept in gratitude and shock! While all of this was going on I was at work silently hoping and praying that this appointment went well. Little did I know it would be life changing! We are so excited and blessed! Of course the adversary tried to take our blessing when we found out that insurance will not cover these custom specialized glasses, but he will not win! We know that God did not bring us to this point for us to not receive this blessing!! These wonderful  life changing glasses are custom and not easy to make. The cost for two pair one for driving and one for reading is just under $4300. As they are not considered necessary to maintain life, insurance will not cover them.
