Karen K Stroke Recovery
Donation protected
In August of 2018, I suffered a stroke that left me paralyzed on the right side of my body. Unfortunately my insurance won’t pay for a lot of the things that I need to be safe at home. Such as a shower chair, hand rails for the bathrooms, raised toilet seats with handrails, additional mobility equipment, etc. All of these expenses will have to come out of pocket, along with traveling to therapy and all the medical bills that are piling up. Please help my kids and I meet some of these needs, so I can continue to heal without the added worries of falls because of the lack of equipment or loosing our house (and many things in between).
For those interested, here’s some back story.
I’m a single mom with three great kids. I’m a nurse. I love photography. I love the outdoors. I love animals. I love helping people. In 2008 my whole world changed. I suffered a series of three strokes that left me with right sided hemiplegia, in a wheelchair and out of work. We found out I have a protein S deficiency in my blood and I also have an AVM in the left frontal lobe of my brain. I began my long road to recovery with lots of doubt from lots of people. I worked hard and didn’t listen to anyone who didn’t see it my way. Those who know me best know how hard headed I am!
Fast forward to my move to Kentucky...
I found a Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center to ride and volunteer at (KFTHC). This was one of the best things to ever happen for my recovery and for me personally. Because of the hard work my kids and I put into my recovery, the amazing therapeutic horseback riding and some great therapist along the way, I regained function of my right side! Now I volunteer full time at Kentucky Foothills Therapeutic Horsemanship Center. We service children and adults with disabilities and we have a Veterans program. This is by far the most rewarding work I’ve ever done! So by helping me get better you are also helping all the children and adults that we provide services to. Our program runs solely on volunteers and I want to be back volunteering ASAP!
