In 2019, Bradley and Tyler's mother, Karen, met with doctors at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She was presented with a sentence that would change her life forever: “Karen, you have cancer.” She was diagnosed with Chondrosarcoma, a rare form of cancer that created a tumor in the hip. As a result, our mom had emergency surgery to remove parts of her hip and femur. Her determination and resilience pushed her through a lengthy period of rehabilitation, where she eventually regained the ability to walk on her own again.
By 2020, our mom learned that cancer had spread to her lungs. Radiation and chemotherapy were recommended as the best treatment to prevent the spread of cancer. Month after month, our mother displayed the utmost bravery during the most gruesome battle of her life. The chemotherapy made her feel terrible and weak; yet, her optimistic outlook on life and a belief that she would win her fight against cancer got her through her darkest days.
By 2022, it was clear that the invasive treatment was not working. Her cancer was growing and spreading throughout the body. However, this is when things finally began to turn for the BETTER. Our mother applied for a medical trial study in the United States. This trial study is designed to fight Chondrosarcoma. On August 1, 2022, we drove our mom to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where she met with a team of doctors in charge of the study. They had reason to believe that she was a perfect match for this new form of treatment. For the first time since 2019, our family finally got some good news. We believe this treatment will work!
The reason for this GoFundMe is simple. We need help to bear the cost of the treatment in the United States. The trial spans about two years, and every three weeks, we will have to drive her and stay overnight in a hotel in New Hampshire. The funds will be used to pay for the cost of gas, hotel stays, and any hospital expenses not covered by the medical trial study.
Today, October 17, is Karen's birthday. Helping her fund her trips to the hospital would be a great gift!
