Karen Lisa Greene Memorial Fund
Donation protected
Karen Lisa Greene, PhD, was a passionate scholar and critical innovator in international child rights who worked as a teacher, researcher, consultant and child advocate in California, Cambodia, the DR Congo, and Uganda.
Having lost her father, mother, and nephew, Karen was no stranger to sorrow. In 2015, she adopted an extraordinary Ugandan girl, Whitney, who herself had survived significant loss. Together, on a shoestring, with shared resilience and a love of dance, they built a worldwide community of friends, relatives and colleagues.
This May (2020) Karen developed cerebral malaria. She died on May 23 in a hospital in Kampala, Uganda. Her loss has been deeply felt on three continents and, of course, by her daughter Whitney, who is currently in the loving care of Karen's close friends, Lika and Dave, and their daughter, in Kampala.
Among family and friends, Karen is remembered for her keen intellect, her endless curiosity, her hospitality and “American pancakes”, her generosity of spirit, her parental advice-sharing, her salsa dancing, her great courage and determination, and her joy at becoming a mother. Karen’s empathy and gentle presence are perhaps best summed up by her Kampala neighbor Sharifa, who wrote, “We loved her. We all the time invited her to our tea times. She was a great and simple human with all.”
This fund is intended to allow Karen's many friends and colleagues to honor her life and the great pride and joy she took in being Whitney's mother. All donations will be used to settle Karen's affairs and to support Whitney's current and future needs. Karen's longtime friends, Arnelle Burg and Kathryn (Kerry) Poethig, whom Karen chose as Whitney's guardians in the event of tragedy, will safeguard and administer these funds on her behalf.
