July 8, 2021 Update

Karen Green passed away today surrounded by close family at Kindred Hospital in Melbourne where she has been since January. The extended nature of this multiple hospital stay and care has incurred many expenses along the way. Our family could use your help now as much as they ever have.

Original Story

Karen Green has been in the hospital with Covid-19 beginning in January. The medical staff inserted a tracheotomy and placed her on a ventilator very soon after. Karen and her family need your help. Please give! Whatever you can give is great; it is not the amount, but the condition of your heart with which you give.

My mother, Karen Green, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend has been a remarkably resilient woman, overcoming the odds for recovery on so many occasions. There are no words that describe how tough my mom has been, through the years, dealing with medical issues. Karen has dealt with psoriasis, kidney disease, kidney failure, kidney transplant, lung infections, chronic pneumonia, and so many other. But, in January, she contracted Covid-19 and it has been the one illness that she has not been able to beat.

She was hospitalized for Covid-19 in Vero Beach, and placed into a medically induced coma and put onto a ventilator. When she came out of the coma and longer-term care was needed, she was moved to a rehab hospital in Melbourne, Florida, where it looked like she was making progress. All of this time has been spent on a ventilator to breathe for her, as she does not have the strength to breath for herself. All of this time period her kidney, which is a transplant from years past, was not able to keep up with the sickness and so she has had to continually be on a regular course of dialysis. Sometimes she is able to tolerate this, but there have been times she could not. She needs the dialysis to help her kidneys keep up with the workload.

Currently her visitation schedule is such that only 2 hours are available per weekday, and only one person at a time. My mother sometimes is aware of what is happening, but most times she is seemingly not there and not responsive. Even in times she is aware, she cannot communicate due to the ventilator having to breathe for her. Her heart and blood pressure have been a constant battle to keep regulated. The ultimate goal would be to get off of the ventilator, though much of the medical advice says this is not a possibility. In this case, the only place that she could be taken care of would be in Georgia. This would be near impossible for my father, Mike, Karen’s husband of 50 Years. He does not want to let go of my mother, and I understand why.

Mike has had a difficult time, having to drive over an hour each direction to visit faithfully and keeping up with the expenses, as this was an unplanned hardship that has been extremely difficult. Their vehicle is now showing signs of needing repairs, but my father does not have the time with all that is happening.

Karen has been wonderful person to everyone she has a relationship with. She always looks to see and encourage the best in people, no matter how much pain she is in. I can’t count the number of family, friends, and people she has come in contact with over the years, but it was always positive. My mother is one of the most awesome people that God ever created.

Now Karen needs your help financially by donating here. I want to formally thank everyone for their help in advance! God bless you.
