Kara is a wife, mother, daughter, 5th grade science and social studies teacher, and a lover of life, to name a few. She has a knack for instilling a love of science in her students and even started an after-school "Science Club" to encourage hands-on experience. Kara is
also a loving wife and an awesome mother to 2 little boys.
6 years ago Kara began to experience seemingly random symptoms with sleep, mood, metabolism, etc. After years of frustration, she recently found a doctor who was willing to sit and listen to her describe what she was experiencing. Hormonal tests were run, and it was found that her cortisol levels were way out of wack. An MRI revealed a 1cm tumor on her pituitary gland. She has finally been diagnosed with Cushings Disease, a fairly rare auto immune disorder caused by that tumor.
Kara was referred to Barrow's Neurological Institute in Phoenix for treatment. She and her husband, Kai, traveled from their home in Midland, Texas to Phoenix in early February for consultation and more testing. She was able to return to Midland the last week of February to spend a week with her children before returning to Phoenix. She is now awaiting surgery to remove the tumor. She has also been counseled that removal of the tumor is only the first step in the recovery from Cushing's Disease. Withdrawal from the high level of cortisol in her system will take many months and can be difficult and painful. She is saddened that she will not be able to finish this school year with her current students but hopes to return to teaching in the fall.
Although Kara has medical insurance, her out-of-pocket expenses for deductible, co-insurance, and items not covered has already reached about $7,000. In addition, she is incurring expenses for travel while her husband has taken a pay cut to spend time with her.
Funds received will be used to off-set medical and travel expenses as well as to allow her family to travel to be with her as needed. We also welcome prayers for Kara and for the doctors and other medical staff who are treating her. Thank you so very much.
