Help Kaprice beat the odds! Glioblastoma IV
Let us introduce to you the family of Kaprice Thomas in Smyrna, Georgia -- beautiful, kind, loving people (including a military veteran) -- who have had their world turned upside down by brain cancer.
In June 2021, Kaprice, a hard-working public servant and tiger mom of three school-aged children, developed a persistent, progressively worsening headache. Doctors discovered a huge mass on the right side of her brain. The outstanding neurology team at Piedmont Hospital successfully performed emergency surgery to relieve the pressure in her head. They were able to remove nearly all of the tumor, but the final diagnosis was a grade 4 glioblastoma (GBM) - a rare, malignant, fast-growing, and aggressive brain tumor.
Incredibly, very little of Kaprice’s cognitive function has been disturbed, but she has a big fight ahead of her, and she is determined to succeed. Kaprice will undergo a months-long chemotherapy and radiation protocol, and she is unable to return to her work as a psychological juvenile evaluator for the State of Georgia.
Kaprice is the loving mother to three wonderful children; ages 15, 13, 11, and spouse of Elgin Thomas, a military veteran. Throughout her life, she has given her all to her family, her work, and her community, including helping veterans with PTSD, supporting at-risk children through her job, serving as the Girl Scout cookie manager for her daughters’ troop, being a beloved friend to many, and so much more. She has always been the one to charge right in when something needs to be done. This is our opportunity to help Kaprice in the biggest fight of her life.
We have initiated this fundraising campaign to support Kaprice’s cancer battle and cover her growing medical costs. She is a beloved wife, mother, professor, educator, mentor, and friend. Every gift, no matter how small, makes a difference! Please also consider sharing Kaprice's story.
Thank you so much for your support, prayers, and well wishes.

UPDATE:
Week two of chemotherapy and radiation began on Monday. Somehow, Kaprice continues to take all of this in stride though she knows that both are methods of poisoning the body in order to terminate the cancer. Because GBM is the most aggressive form of brain cancer, we know that this is a marathon, rather than a sprint. In the next few months, in addition to fighting GBM, Kaprice will lose access to healthcare. Her insurance is through her job with the State of Georgia and we will need to look at how to identify another source of insurance. BUT, today, the radiologist gave Kaprice permission to use regular shampoo and, finally, conditioner! This milestone means that the deeper layers of skin have healed from the craniotomy and there is a much less risk of necrosis (death of tissue) during radiation. It is these little wins that keep Kaprice smiling. She is fighting fatigue and has been sleeping (A LOT) but so far, she is handling the chemotherapy and radiation well. Five percent of people with GBM live longer than the 8-14 month prognosis. We want to keep her spirits up so that the stress of the world doesn't impact her ability to focus on being healthy. We SO appreciate you for all of your well-wishes, prayers, gifts, food delivery, and for the acts of service that so many of you have generously offered. YOU GIVE US ALL HOPE. Blessings.......
