The Kansas City Sports Academy's mission is to provide athletic, academic, and life skills resources to youth across the Kansas City metro area, creating a new space to significantly impact the future generations of our city.
As a former football player at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I understand the importance of learning how to manage a rigorous academic schedule and the demands of being an athlete. One of the appeals to attending the University of Nebraska was the proximity of the athletic facilities, academic center, and life skills center. Coaches and academic staff members communicated consistently about athlete’s progress in the classroom, which created a chain of accountability. Life skills staff members routinely provided athletes with opportunities to volunteer in the local community and helped athletes create networks with alumni and local business owners. These services were an important piece in building up well- rounded individuals, helping student-athletes think about a future outside of sports and providing prospective and resources to be successful in any arena.
There is a tremendous need for programs that provide constructive activities and positive support for high-risk youth, after school and throughout the summer. Especially with the uncertainty of the upcoming school year and the possibility of no fall sports, it is important that we provide our youth with as much support as possible. Many of our most vulnerable youth in Kansas City will be left at home and forced to learn from behind a computer screen, where they will struggle to stay on task and subsequently fall behind academically. High-risk youth who utilize sports as their primary avenue to create a better future for themselves and those around them are vulnerable to neglecting other vital components that lead to a successful future. The Kansas City Sports academy’s primary objective is to fill this gap and provide our youth with opportunities for academic, athletic and social advancement.
In addition, another extremely important feature of our training facility will be the life skills component. Life skills and mental health go hand in hand and at Kansas City Sports Academy is a top priority. We understand that a lot of the problems our youth athletes face is off the field and outside of the classroom. Some athletes are members of communities plagued with a lack of economic opportunity and, consequently, high crime and violence. This can have drastic effects on the psychological health of any individual, but especially teenagers. The problems faced within our community cannot be solved by athletics and education alone. In partnership with other organizations in our community, this component will be able to provide on-site assistance in areas such as conflict resolution and creating healthy coping mechanisms, as well as act as a liaison to those organizations who can assist our athletes with more pressing issues such as food, housing, etc.
Being able to build a training facility, here in Kansas City, that will offer academic and life skill resources has always been a dream of mine. Your donation will go towards helping build the foundation of our facility, help us obtain equipment for training and resources for our academic and life skills program. All proceeds will go directly to the Kansas City Sports Academy business account and will be used 100% for the advancement of our programs and training.
