Kanisha had 3 brain surgeries and the first two went well. She had her third one on June 2nd. She had tumor hemorrhaging which is why she needed the emergency surgery. Prior to the surgery they told her there was a possibility she'd have some complications from the surgery. Once the surgery was complete, she was no longer herself. Kanisha could no longer walk, talk or eat on her own. The hospital staff said she was in a vegetative state which I didn't claim. Whenever I would call her name, she'd raise her eyebrows and turn her head my way. If I asked her to squeeze my hand, she'd do it. She was at Wellstar Hospital in Augusta Georgia for about two months before being transferred to Landmark Hospital in Savannah Georgia. Her Medicaid only paid for her to be in Landmark Hospital for 60 days, so she was discharged Tuesday September 16th. On Wednesday she was stable with her vitals being good. She had a fever and was given medication for it to go down. On Thursday hospice came and checked her out. They said her oxygen levels were fine with her vitals being ok. Around 4am on Friday morning I went to change and feed her. She had a feeding tube and everything was fine. I tapped her and turned her over to change her and she made a face. I went back in at 8am and she was still fine she had more secretions than normal so I suctioned her out through the trachea and mouth. Our sister Mesha slept in the room with her and was on the phone when I went back in at 11:20am. I don't think she realized she had passed and said she had just woken up. I went over to tap her and shook her then I immediately called 911. My husband and I laid her on the floor and I started chest compressions until the police arrived. The EMTs arrived shortly after the police and they worked on her for 25 minutes but she was gone. We couldn't bring her back and I honestly think she waited to get home and be around family and familiar voices to be at peace. Unfortunately, she does not have life insurance and we need the communities help from her friends and family to send her home respectfully.
