Kangaroo Island Fire Relief
Donation protected
Four houses, three farms and nine family members have been left with nothing but burnt ground after the devastating fires on Kangaroo Island.
My family is among many left with nothing.
The Kangaroo Island Fires have been raging out of control for two weeks - mostly fought by farmers and their families while other community members have been cooking madly and delivery food and water to the firefighters. They are fatigued and overwhelmed.
The fire viciously swept through farming land, with people losing houses, stock, equipment and vehicles.
The island is low on water and supplies. Groceries are running low. It is dire.
And the fire continues to rage, being described as "virtually unstoppable". Just two towns - Penneshaw and Kingscote - are the only places "safe" for refuge.
We are raising much-needed funds to help with immediate relief - many people have donated clothing and furniture. Now we need cash to enable the KI fire victims to buy the essential items.
All donations will assist. Everything raised will go directly to the KI victims, distributed through the community as quickly as possible, through Kaylene Graham - herself a victim of the fires, her farm gone, but her house safe. Her children and their families were not so lucky with 5 farms gone in total and 4 houses along with sheds, equipment and sadly, stock. With her house intact, Kaylene has supplied a roof over the head of those who lost theirs, cooked over 40 meals a day for farmers fighting the fires, then delivered them.
Your donations will be used as needed - tasks like, fencing, water cartage and of course mental health. Houses will take over a year to even start re-building, so assistance will be given to fund the delivery of shipping containers to farms to store donations in readiness for new houses if required. The containers can easily be converted to a get-away for families who are now forced to live with other families - so many uses. The distribution will be at the discretion of Kaylene, an outstanding community leader.
