My niece, Kandice Rumsey, at the age of 28, found a significate lump on her left breast and went in for a mammogram. In September of 2023 she was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Along with this new diagnosis she was also made aware that she has the BRCA 1 gene. This gene causes a higher risk for Kandice which includes not only breast but ovarian and pancreatic cancer.

They had Kandice immediately started Chemo in October. Her first round lasted 12 weeks, where she was having to go once a week. During this session she became neutropenic and had to stop early. Her beautiful long hair that she was known for was now all gone. The second round of Chemo (nicknamed “The Red Devil”) was also set for 12 weeks. This Chemo is so strong that they must space it out to go every three weeks.

With the round of “Red Devil” Chemo Kandice has been in the hospital three separate times for a total of 13 days. Her body was fighting infections, and her white cell count was very low. The poor girl could not even stand up because she was so weak. She has had to have blood transfusions and was given several antibiotics.

It has now been decided that because Kandice’s body was not responding well to the Chemo, her oncologist team decided to end her Chemo treatment early and schedule her first surgery sooner than expected.

We know that the Chemo has shrunk the lump in her breast which is great, but she still has a long road ahead. Kandice will be getting a double mastectomy and removal of some lymph nodes mid-March, following up with reconstruction in the future. Because of her having the BRCA 1 gene, Kandice will also be getting a hysterectomy in late 2024 or early 2025.

Kandice is an incredible mother to her almost 3-year-old daughter, Brinlee and 18-month-old son, Branson. She is also a loving wife to her husband, Jesse. Kandice’s strength and good attitude is a true picture of the type of person she is.
