Kamilah's Journey

Hi everyone, my name is Briana and I'm fundraising for my younger brother Anthony, his fiancé Killiany and their beautiful newborn daughter, Kamilah. At Killiany's 12 week ultrasound, they discovered that Kamilah's heart is located on the right side of her chest. This surprising discovery led to an early anatomy scan at 16 weeks gestation and during this ultrasound it showed a mass on Kamilah's lung was present. With these early and unfortunate complications, Doctors felt that it would be best for future and bi-weekly testing be done at CHOP, so Killiany and Kamilah would be cared for in the best hands. Kamilah was diagnosed with Congenital Cystic Adenomatoid Malformation (CCAM), which is a benign lung lesion that appears before birth as a cyst or mass in the chest. It is made up of abnormal lung tissue that does not function propertly but continues to grow. Thankfully the lesion remained somewhat small but would have to be removed soon after birth. Continuing to work and go on with daily life, at 28 weeks Killiany was diagnosed with having Polyhydramnios which is the excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid- the fluid that surrounds the baby in the uterus during pregnancy. From that point on, weekly ultrasounds took place and if they haven't already heard enough heart breaking news, Kamilah was then diagnosed with Esophageal Atresia and Tracheoesophageal Fistula (EA/TEF). These are rare conditions that often occur together and affect the development of the esophagus and trachea. To keep things simple, Kamilah's esophagus is connected to her lungs and needs to be connected to her stomach. Kamilah made her arrival at 33 weeks gestation, weighing 3 lbs 3 oz at St. Luke's Adverson via emergency c-section due to distress from the excessive amniotic fluid. She was immediately put on a ventilator, stabilized and flown to CHOP shortly after her arrival. At 4 days old she had her first surgery to remove the lung lesion. Her recovery is going well and will need to undergo her next surgery in a few weeks. It has not been an easy journey for the past few months but Anthony, Killiany and Kamilah continue to stay strong. Killiany is currently residing at CHOP to be with Kamilah, and Anthony continues to work and travels to Philly every weekend to be with his girls. I love these three more than words could ever express and wish that I could solve all of their problems with the snap of my fingers. No one knows what lies ahead for Kamilah's medical journey but we all have faith that everything will be okay. Donations will be able to help with medical bills, travel expenses and any time having to take off from work. There is no amount too small, any donation will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read and understand baby Kamilah's Journey. <3
