Thanks to all our  supporters, the Kalumburu Photography Collective has now sold out of calendars from Kalumburu Community in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia.

This calendar was developed by the Kalumburu Photography Collective; a community-driven microenterprise project led by women entrepreneurs in the remote community of Kalumburu in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. The women are interested in exploring photography as a way to increase employment opportunities in Kalumburu, as well as to archive, share and celebrate their culture and country with wider Australia and the world.

In 2017 the women participated in the Olympus VISION Project : a two-part skill development workshop series providing women with opportunities to learn skills in both photography and microenterprise/small business. This project supported the women to gain the skills, knowledge and confidence in order to launch the Kalumburu Photography Collective.  Photographer Freedom Garvey-Warr shared her knowledge of photography and small business with local community members to enable the women to launch their own enterprise. The project was facilitated by Enterprise Learning Projects ’ WA team; Clare Wood and Susannah Wallman.

All profits from sale of the calendars will be reinvested into the Kalumburu Photography Collective to fund future photography enterprise activities and further product development. This project strengthens the women’s connection to country, culture and language and promotes health and wellbeing. It provides a tangible and realistic opportunity for economic empowerment and enables people to create their own solutions to the issues impacting their lives.

“Doing business can make your life count, make your children proud.  I want to live long, I want to learn.  I feel excited to hold a camera and take photos.  Nothing is going to hold me back.  I want to become something”.

Tarisha Mouda, Indigenous Entrepreneur, Kalumburu
