Hey everyone I’m reaching out for help while my family is struggling through an unforeseen hardship.
My sister Kali was dealt an unfair hand but did everything she could to maintain a normal life. She was born with Aortic Stenosis and had two heart surgeries before the age of 4. Since then kali thrived in volleyball growing up while also being an honor student. Kali graduated from high school early and obtained two bachelor’s degrees from TCU.
Unfortunately the repair of her heart at such a young age didn’t last. Kali over the years has developed Heart Failure and severe Pericarditis. Kali’s quality of life diminished rapidly. Kali could hardly walk without feeling faint or actually passing out. Kali struggled everyday, all day. She needed a very risky surgery to fix the problem. She needed her Pericardium removed. Kali searched all over the United States for a surgeon who would take her case. It was difficult due to her age and such a high risk procedure. She finally found a doctor in Chicago and worked with him for a year to prepare for surgery. We now find ourself in Chicago for her surgery after a lifetime seeing Kali struggle, waiting for a better quality of life. If the surgery went as planned Kali would be in and out of the hospital quickly and on the road to recovery.
That’s not what has happened. During the surgery, the removal of the pericardium went just as planned but at some point during the procedure, Kali’s brain lost blood flow which means it didn’t receive enough oxygen. However, this was not known until after the surgery when the doctors attempted to take her off the ventilator she would continuously have seizures. Through CT it was proven Kali had no evidence of having a stroke. Kali has an Anoxic Brain Injury and the only explanation is it happened under the care of her doctors. Doctors are humans too, and humans make mistakes. I understand this was not intentional, but Kali trusted these doctors to help her have a better life and at this point her quality of life has declined.
Kali has been in the hospital for a week on the ventilator and it’s unknown if or when she will come off and further recover. It’s almost certain Kali will have some deficits neurologically she will have to rehab. Kali could be in the hospital for a very long time, and that’s why I’m reaching out for help. If this surgery went as planned, there would be no need to reach out.
Kali is about to face a massive bill from the hospital and from rehabilitation. Living expenses for my parents alone are adding up. They can’t leave her in Chicago alone and finances should be the last of the concerns during this hard time.
Kali is so strong and continues to fight everyday. We pray everyday for her recovery.
Thank you in advance to anyone that can help. If financially you cannot help then please,
Pray.
