Kalibu Burundi - A library for girls
Donation protected
Please help us raise €33,000 for a safe space for girls and women in Burundi
Across the globe, women and children are victims of domestic abuse and physical or sexual violence. Unfortunately, the number of women and girls affected by this issue is also staggeringly high in Burundi. We aim to address this by creating a space for women and girls to come together in Kalibu, a community library. Community is at the core of Kalibu and the goal is to make the library self-sufficient and safe. The name Kalibu is Swahili for Welcome. It is a common word used in many East African countries which holds an instant warm, embracing, and unifying feeling. Thus, the name matches the atmosphere of Kalibu’s Community Space.

What will we be doing?
We aim to provide resources to empower girls and women who enter the space. Kalibu strives to create a hospitable and authentic community by January 2023. Our planned programs aim to educate and equip Kalibu's people. Your contribution will directly help fight the global education plight by enabling a space for children to do their school homework and for women to further their education. This library should bring with it a sense of community.
As a result of droughts in Burundi and farming being the primary source of income, hunger has affected the lives of many families. Thus, our feeding programs will be essential to fuel this project by connecting people and creating "Kalibu". We believe that a full stomach feeds the mind.
Our Target Group
Children between the age of 6-15 and women between the age of 18-65 are the main target groups for this program. They mostly come from the areas directly surrounding Bujumbura, Burundi’s Economic capital. In this village, agriculture is the primary source of income and illiteracy is high. Moreover, since the drought has affected the financial conditions in these households, girls and women fall victim to different forms of abuse. These abuses range from domestic violence and physical and sexual abuse. Kalibu aims to address these issues by providing direct assistance for these individuals in understanding their rights.
Our Program and Activities
Our holistic approach and our partnerships with local organizations enable us to serve women and girls as a whole.
"Kalibu" offers a variety of workshops such as:
- Daily feeding program
- Reading and Writing classes
- Self-defence classes
- Art Therapy (dance)
Our living room will be a place for people to freely enter and feel safe.
