First Year of College at FSU

Donation protected
Hi my name is Kalayah Sargeant and I am 17 years old.  I recently graduated from Pompano Beach High School (PBHS) with a weighted GPA of 4.6371.  PBHS, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, has been rated an “A” school by the Florida Department of Education for the past nine years.  PBHS, a National Magnet School of Distinction is also ranked 19th in the state of Florida by U.S. News and World Report.
I created this fundraiser because I am hoping to become a student, and graduate from the university of my dream, Florida State University (FSU).  I’m hoping to raise enough money for me to pay for my first year of college.  I have been accepted to FSU; however the Bright Futures Scholarship of $2,310 a year, that I have been granted isn’t sufficient to cover my college expenses for the first year.  I am unable to take a private loan because I am under 18.  I did not qualify for anything but governmental loans, and even with accepting the loans that I have been offered, I will not be able to attend Florida State University.

I am hoping to raise $20,000 for my first year of college.  If 800 people donate $25 dollars I will be able to attend FSU and go through my first year of college.

You may be wondering “Why should I help this student?”  Well, I would like to give you a little history of what I have been doing for my school, and in my community.  After you read through it, I’m certain that you will decide to help with funding towards my goal.

While in high school, I was involved in Student Government Association (SGA), and was very active in both my school and my community.  In my sophomore year, I began as a volunteer in Student Government, became a member junior year, and held an SGA officer position my senior year.

As an officer, much of my time was dedicated to ensure that the school and community benefitted from SGA.  I, along with my officer board, coordinated activities with Broward Children’s Center, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Harvest Drive and Honor Flight South Florida to ensure that we were making a difference within our community.

I have also been involved with Business Professionals of America (BPA) and competed as a member of the Parliamentary Procedure Team which placed second on the regional level, and first in state of Florida.
Now that you’ve heard of some of the extracurricular activities that I have been involved in, I would like to ask you to please help fund me with whatever contribution you can.  With your generous help, I will be funded for my first year of college, and will be able to attend the college of my dream.

My parents have challenged me to try to raise the first $20,000 for college and they will cosign to help me with my second year.  They believe that one has to work hard in getting to their goal and would like to see that I have taken the initiative in getting the funding necessary to begin my studies.  My estimated college debt for 4 years to obtain my bachelor’s degree is $80,000.  Once I have obtained this degree, I plan to apply to law school after completing my undergrad.

Ever since the fifth grade,(elementary graduation picture, Pearl B. Larsen Elementary School, St. Croix, U.S.Virgin Islands)if you were to ask me what I wanted to be, I would respond and say that I wanted to become a lawyer. This goal remained the same until my junior year of high school when I considered studying Communications. I thought that this was what I wanted to do but I realized that I have always been interested in law so I decided to major in Business Management and then apply to law school after completing my undergrad.

Recently, I received a letter from futureme.org. In this letter that I was instructed to write at the ending of eighth grade, I told myself that I would be a successful lawyer or successful business woman.

With support from the community, friends, family and other sources, I will be able to get the funding necessary to start FSU and eventually working towards my goal of becoming an attorney.

Please consider donating in order for me to fulfill my dreams. Any amount will be greatly appreciated, but again, if 800 people donate $25 dollars I will indeed be able to go through my first year of college at Florida State University.

Thank you for your support and contribution.  May God bless you as you give generously.
