In 2015 my beautiful, happy and creative daughter, Kaitlyn Pelt was diagnosed with “Major Depressive Disorder”, MDD and OCD. (What was believed to be postpartum depression, became something much more serious in nature) Kaitlyn has two children: Liam, 6 years old and Juniper soon to be 2 years old. In the years after Liam’s birth, Kaitlyn underwent multiple drug therapies which proved to be unsuccessful. After the birth of her second child Juniper, Kaitlyn sank into a paralyzing depression coupled with extreme anxiety. After months of counseling, multiple drug combinations, therapies and hospitalizations; Kaitlyn’s world crashed. The depression and anxiety caused a downward spiral Kaitlyn was unable to rise above. On September 3, 2020, Kaitlyn checked herself into an Inpatient rehabilitation hospital to fight for her life. The anti-depressant, mood stabilizer and anxiety drugs only caused suicidal idealations and greater anxiety. The hoplessness made life unbearable! Kaitlyn desperately wanted to live life as God intended, cherishing her roles as mother and wife. Embracing her creative talents as writer and creator. She was imprisoned in mental anguish, with all her energy focused on surviving another day.
During her inpatient treatment the doctors concluded, through multiple evaluations and blood tests, that Kaitlyn is resistant to most drugs that treat MDD and is hormonally deficient. She is now undergoing a specialized treatment called ECT, electroconvulsive therapy, counseling and hormone replacement. The treatments are helping tremendously to diminish the depression and anxiety. She is now feeling strong enough to go home and start living her life again! However, the treatments and counseling therapies will be ongoing. Due to the cost of the therapies, the medical bills have become overwhelming for her family. The monies raised through this GoFundMe page would go directly to pay for her Inpatient hospitalization costs, past and future ECT treatments as well as counseling therapy and other medical bills related to her mental health.
My prayer and hope for Kaitlyn is that she can recover from this depression and live life to her fullest potential as mother, wife, and friend. As a result of these breakthrough therapies, she can now begin writing, taking her children to the park, cooking for her family, working, as well as studying to become a Doula.
Our mental health is often taken for granted and mental illness is misunderstood by many people. We are told to suck it up, pick yourself up by your bootstraps and don’t succumb to the emotions, put it behind you and get over it! But if you know anyone with mental illness, you know this is an impossibility. If getting better were simply a matter of attitude and being strong, Kaitlyn would be better. She has tried every treatment and alternative treatment that providers, friends and family have asked of her or suggested. She has done all of this with the best attitude that anyone could ask of her. She has fought continually, for her life and to have a life worth living. Mental illness is just as real and life threatening as cancer. Not only is getting help critical, but also getting an accurate diagnosis so you can not only heal your brain, but also take your life back. We are in a a mental health pandemic, and our health system is struggling to keep up. I thank God that he has placed these miracle workers in our path so that Kaitlyn may enjoy a life she had lost.
Thank you for your prayers and financial support to help Kaitlyn and her family through this dark time into the light! God bless you and your family!
