My older sister Kaitlyn has been battling cancer for 3 years.
She was diagnosed in 2019 with breast cancer that had mastesized to her lymphnodes, to her lungs and her brain. She had received a mastectomy for the affected breast in 2019, chemotherapy for her lungs, and underwent surgery for the large tumor in her brain in 2020.
Over several hard months, Kaitlyn made what seemed to be a full recovery.
In March of 2022, her ongology team declared that she was a stable cancer patient.
A few weeks later she was feeling weak, very fatigued and thought it was because she had recently quit eating meat. She went for some bloodwork to check to see what was going on, and found out that she had really low hemoglobin levels due to her oral chemotherapy.
She was also experiencing head aches like crazy and she just knew something was off. After 4 blood transfusions to get her blood back up to a healthy level, she went for a CT scan for her head, and her doctors found that her brain cancer had returned.
She was sent to Edmonton to receive gamma knife therapy for her brain cancer.
While Kaitlyn was in Edmonton she recieved an MRI that ended up showing over 50 brain tumors. The medical team in Edmonton was unable to perform gamma knife radiation for her so they sent her home.
Her medical team in Red Deer had to make a new game plan, and she went for 10 rounds of full brain radiation in the beginning of May to treat the tumors.
In the meantime because her blood levels were so low Kaitlyn was unable to receive her oral chemotherapy and it was clear that the treatment was no longer working, which unfortunately gave her cancer the ability to grow rapidly and aggressively, spreading throughout her lungs and now into her liver.
Since seeing her doctor and recieving a more detailed scan of her lungs she was able to start a new chemotherapy in late May.
She also recently underwent radiation for a large lymphnode that had been blocking her airway making it very difficult for her to breathe.
Kaitlyn is currently waiting for direction from her team of doctors as to what the next moves will be for her.
She's in a state at the moment where she can't keep a lot of food down and she is very fatigued and out of breath.
Her body has gone through so much over the last 3 years.
She is currently at home with family and wants nothing more than to spend some quality time with her 2 sons and loving partner in the wild and rustic nature of Vancouver Island.
She will hopefully be strong enough to make a trip out from Alberta in between chemotherapy treatments if all goes according to plan.
This fundraiser will allow Kaitlyn to go on the trip of a lifetime with her family, and will allow for her partner to not have to travel away for work.
Kaitlyn and her family all need to spend precious time together and enjoy what they can of the summer.
The funds raised here will also cover medical expenses for Kaitlyn's treatments, at home care nurses, travel expenses for appointments, and living costs such as her rent and grocery bills for the next little while.
It's been a long 3 years for Kaitlyn and her family, and it pains me that we're at this point.
I've been putting off making this fundraiser because I didn't want to believe it's true. It feels like a bad dream.
But watching Kaitlyn do hard things inspires me to do hard things too.
We don't know what's in store for Kaitlyn and her family right now, but I just want to make sure that life is as easy and stress free as possible for her so that she can recieve the care and rest that she needs to ensure she can stick around for a long as possible.
If you are able to contribute in any way we thank you from the bottom of our collective hearts for helping out our family in this extremely challenging time.
Please also if you are unable to contribute financially, you can share this fundraiser with your friends and loved ones near and far to spread the word of Kaitlyns story.
Thank you so much for reading ♡
We appreciate you.
