Hi, I’m Lyande Kaikai and I am raising the final funds needed to complete the building of a children's park consisting of an adventure playground, a growing garden and a nursery in Kailahun, Sierra Leone.
I started the project in January 2023 and so far have self funded, spending just over £30,000 on equipment, building materials and labour to clear the land, build the nursery and cover material shipping costs.
As a child, I spent my early years in Kailahun playing in my family compound. Although this was fun, I did not have the opportunity to create bonds and friendships with other children within the community, due to a lack of safe, open spaces.
Becoming a parent has reinforced for me the importance of children having safe places to meet. This park will offer multiple spaces for playing, socialising and learning in a designated safe space for current and future generations of children in Kailahun.
When I travelled to Kailahun in December 2022, the local community confirmed that there are still a lack of open, free spaces for children to play. This led to me having the idea to create a multipurpose children's park that can be used for playing and learning in the community.
Kai's Adventure Playground & Nursery contains three key areas:
- The Playground will be used for playing. There will be two different areas; (1) for 0-5 year olds with a small climbing pyramid, den, slide and swing and (2) for 6-14 year olds that will have a big climbing frame, slide, swings and a trampoline.
- The Growing Garden, will be used for agriculture. The garden beds will grow fruits, vegetables and plants.
- The Main Building will be used for the nursery and indoor events. The space will have two toilets and a shower for those using the park facilities during opening hours.
Kai's Adventure Playground and Nursery is set to open to the local community on Friday 16th June 2023, which is also International Day of the African Child.
The building project started in January 2023 and things are well on the way with the land cleared, the nursery building almost complete and the playground equipment being built and securely positioned.
Now, I really need your support to help me get this project over the finish line! Your donations will help us to cover remaining costs including materials to finish off the park area, a bore hole to supply water and furnishings for the nursery, (e.g. tables and chairs for the children, tricycles, bookshelves and books, paints, crayons etc).
The park will be free for all children to use during opening hours and the nursery will be free for up to 25 children to attend during the week. The costs of running the nursery will be covered through sponsoring a child every year.
