Kai’s 9 Lives: My Cat’s Fight for a Chance at Life

Hi, my name is Alexis, and I’m humbly reaching out to ask for help for my cat, Kai.

Kai is my fighter who is battling nasal cancer (lymphoma), seizures, blindness, and the devastating effects of cancer treatment. Despite everything, he's still finding the strength to purr every day.

It began with what seemed like a simple lump above Kai’s left eye. At his first vet visit, we were told it might be an abscess and we were given antibiotics. A few days later, Kai was wobbly, not eating, and couldn’t even walk properly. He was just staying in one place, hissing and grunting whenever someone pets him. We thought he was just reacting to the medication, but things were getting worse.

We rushed to a second vet, who took a sample of the lump, and told us the words no pet parent wants to hear: “It’s most likely cancer.” We were referred to an oncologist when the biopsy results came back.

By then, Kai had lost his vision completely. We were told the mass was pressing on his eyes and brain. The biopsy confirmed it: nasal lymphoma, an aggressive cancer.

While waiting for radiation to begin, Kai was placed on prednisone, which helped briefly, but then his vision disappeared again, and he stopped eating. Then came the first seizure. It was terrifying for my family who witnessed it.

At the ER, Kai was given high dose IV steroids, and the next morning, he underwent emergency radiation. The vet warned me Kai might not survive anesthesia; and if he does, there's no guarantee he will be able to see again or be his normal self. If we wait, he might die at any moment.

So I had to choose for his best chance at survival. Kai survived. It was a miracle. Just after the first radiation treatment, he could see again.

After five radiation treatments, Kai began chemotherapy (CHOP protocol) to stop the spread to the brain and other organs. But chemo came with devastating side effects — nausea, foaming at the mouth, incontinence, appetite loss, and more seizures. My family and I work together to keep Kai comfortable and strong to keep fighting.

I’m doing everything I can for him, but I’m also a transplant patient myself, with my own ongoing medical expenses. My whole family is taking care of Kai, especially my mom, who also has to sacrifice a lot of time to be able to take care of Kai.

It's been a constant struggle between medication schedule, vet visits, emergency care, and daily monitoring.

Despite it all, he still kneads his blanket, purrs when we're near, and cuddles like he always has. He's still my smart, sweet and clingy cat. Kai is not just a pet, he is family. He has been with me through everything, and I will do everything for him.

But financially, I'm at a point of needing assistance.

Between:
• Emergency vet visits
• Biopsy and diagnostics
• Specialty consultations
• Radiation (palliative)
• Chemotherapy
• Seizure medications
• Anti-nausea and pain medications
• Daily care and travel costs

It's all become overwhelming.

His initial urgent vet visits came out to be at least $1,000. His biopsy and first specialty vet visit cost $4,500. The radiation treatment was $4,500, plus the travel and lodging in between. The emergency visits cost at least $1,500 in total so far. And the ongoing chemotherapy treatments cost $12,000. This does not include medications and possible vet visits in between.

Every dollar will go toward Kai’s continued treatment and care, to help him live the life he’s still fighting so hard for.

Even if you can’t donate, sharing this campaign would mean the world to Kai and me.

Please help me fight for him, like he’s never stopped fighting for life.

With love,
Kai and Alexis
