Kaipo Chock

Hey everyone, my name is Tyler Cendejas. I’m Kaipo Chock’s son, as some of you may know for the past couple years Kaipo has been diagnosed and living with FTD (Frontotemporal Dementia). This is a rare state of dementia that causes severe problems with behavior, communication, emotions, and motor function, along with memory loss and loss of bodily control. Although, he has only been diagnosed within the past 10 months, it has completely changed the man everyone has known, he is not the same Kaipo we remember and laughed with for so many years. He struggles with the simplest tasks and truly has no idea where he is and or what he is doing. Currently, Kaipo needs constant assistance and we have been with him almost 24 hours a day to keep him from injuries, to help him eat, and to get dressed. It is so extreme my mom, Bobbi, had to leave her job last December, to be able to give him the 24/7 care that he’s needed. To stay afloat we have sold many of our belongings, and have also been working on getting state assistance, along with any extra help we can get from hospitals, doctors, and caseworkers to make sure Kaipo is able to get the care that he needs.

A brief summary about Kaipo:
For those who don’t know him, Calvin “Kaipo” Chock, has always been a hard working man who put his family and community first. He owned and operated a local door and window construction company in La Crescenta, CA for nearly 30 years. Kaipo was a huge part of the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce for many years, and was even the acting President for 3 of those years. Anyone in the community can attest that he truly, was the “Man of the People” and would stick his neck out for anyone that needed help.

Kaipo was entered into the hospital on June 8th because he had lost almost all of his motor functions and was unable to eat. Since then there has been a series of testing done and has been moved to a physical rehab center to provide round the clock medical care. Kaipo sadly can no longer eat solid foods or carry a conversation. Since he has been in a hospital bed for over a month now, we do not believe he will be capable of walking again. The Chock family has come to a point where we need to ask others for help. We truly feel so blessed and thankful to have such wonderful friends and the amazing support we have received through this time. We understands that times are hard but we truly are thankful for any donations and/ or prayers. The Chocks also hope that you can help us spread awareness to other people and family’s about this horrible disease.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
