Kaimi Paredes was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer in his right leg, at the age of 14 in January 2014, He underwent a year of treatment, including chemotherapy and limb-salvage surgery. In January 2015, he began the first stages of remission. However, Kaimi began to suffer from congestive heart failure from the chemotherapy. Since then, he has used medications and hospital stays to manage this condition. In early 2020, he began to get progressively ill. What started as seemingly a common cold got worse and worse, and he developed a constant cough and severe lethargy. About two weeks ago, in late June 2020, he finally got an appointment with a cardiologist, which had been delayed due to COVID-19. His heart failure had progressed further, and his ejection fraction (how much blood his heart was pumping to his body) was less than 15%, while normal people have an ejection fraction in the 60%-70% range. Because his body cannot receive sufficient amounts of blood and oxygen, many of his internal organs began failing. On June 27, his body began shutting down, losing his eyesight and hearing temporarily. He’s currently staying at Rochester Strong Memorial hospital in Rochester, NY awaiting a heart transplant, while a device in his heart pumps his blood manually. There is no way to know how long this wait is will be. In order to have someone close to him during this entire time, his mother will be staying in Rochester, though she can only see him for a few hours each day. She must stay at a hotel since there are limited housing options due to the current health pandemic. Because of this, the family’s expenses are quite high and increasing. Any donations will go towards supporting this family in their time of need, being used for hotel costs, food, travel expenses, and any other necessities.
