Kailana Diabetic Service Dog

Hello everyone and thank you for visiting! I decided to create this fund in hopes of helping to raise both funds and awareness for a cause that is so important to me. My mom Cathy Kelley-Mowatt and her new pup Kailana are embarking on an important but expensive journey together. The thought of my mother needing to rely on another being (especially a canine) for life saving purposes is truthfully a terrifying thought but I feel confident and excited about the future and freedom that Kailana will soon be able to provide to her. Here is her story..

Hello everyone I am Cathy and the cute one is Kailana (adored one in Hawaiian).

I was diagnosed about 48 years ago with Juvenile Diabetes which is now known as Type 1 Diabetes. Unlike Type 2 Diabetes there is no cure. Even with a daily balance of food and medication diabetes can lead to severe complications and sometimes death. Over the years I have experienced literally thousands upon thousands of shots, finger pricks and admissions to the hospital. I learned at a very young age not to allow any of this to keep me from becoming a strong, determined, independent woman! I gave birth 28 years ago to a healthy daughter and now am the grandmother to an amazing healthy granddaughter. I have NEVER allowed this disease to hold me back! Then… a few years ago I began becoming unaware of dangerously low and high blood sugars. I can leave the house at a safe blood sugar reading and within a half hour be near unconsciousness! The unfortunate reality is that even with proper attention to the disease, this is a common complication that I will have to live with forever. I feel like my independence is being robbed and the thought of a future of constant worry is devastating!!!! This is where Kailana comes into the picture….

Kailana was born May 3, 2016. She joined our family at 8 weeks old. She is from Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue. After being tempermant tested she was found to be perfect for my purpose. Kailana and I are undertaking the biggest adventure of our lives. Kailana is training to be my Diabetic Medic Alert Service Dog. Most people obtain already trained Diabetic Medic Alert dogs but I have a heart for rescue and have chosen to train Kailana thru a professional service dog trainer.  Kailana will learn to alert me to low and/or high blood sugar levels before they become life threatening with her keen sense of smell up to a half hour before they get low or high. She will also by command bring my both glucose and blood test kit. This will require 2 years of specialized daily training. By the end of our training Kailana will know me better than you know the back of your hand!!!!

The required training is incredibly expensive and for many years I have put it off as an unnecessary expense. However, with the support of my family and friends I have realized how valuable Kailana and her service will be to me. In the future, Kailana could potentially save my life many times over!! Thank you for so much for taking the time to allow me to share my story with you.
