My name is Daniel and my younger sister Kaila was born with Down syndrome, but was also born with only one working kidney. At the age of 2 she had to have surgery for a blocked ureteric stent on that kidney. On June 16th, 2016, her kindey began to decline and needed to be rushed to Kaleida Health in Buffalo, NY. Since then she has needed to have monthly examinations at that hospital, which is 75 miles from her home. Kaila was added to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) national database on November 6, 2019. Finally, her listing status was changed from inactive to active on August 25th, 2020.

While the insurance is going to cover the initial expenses of the transplant, it doesn't cover the non medical expenses. If a kidney donor is found, the operation would be taking place at the Hillman Center for Pediatric Transportation in Pittsburgh, PA. Which is 150+ miles from her home. Her parents will need gas money for transportation, a hotel room, and food for at least 30 days forKaila to recuperate.
